- I'm planning an upgrade to a 28.8 modem from my current 14.4 external
- VIVA by Computer Peripherals. I'm trying to figure out if spending
- the extra bucks on a Sportster is worth it compared to going with a
- cheaper ($50 to $75 cheaper) Rockwell based modem (probably a
- Cardinal).
-
- After following this group for awhile, it seems most people are at the
- mercy of their phone line quality as to whether they have success with
- their Rockwell modems (and Sportsters, for that matter).
-
- My current 14.4 VIVA (a Rockwell based early 14.4 modem, not RPI) gets
- consistent 14.4 connects (pretty common, I presume). The manual
- describes an AT%Q command which is "Report Line Signal Quality".
- I usually get a 7 reported back, which the manual states is in the
- good range. The range is 0 (best) to 127 (worst).
-
- Is this indicative of a good quality line on which I might get as good
- a connect to my ISP with a Rockwell modem as with a more expensive
- Sportster? Or is this just a meaningless indicator? The ISP, by the
- way, uses a USR Total Control modem pool, soon to be upgraded to 33.6
- capability.
